Did you know the European Hamster can store up to 65kg of food in its burrow?!

This remarkable ability to hoard food is equivalent to having your own mini grocery store underground. These tiny critters only consume around 50g of food per day. This means that the 65kg stash could sustain them for approximately three and a half years!

But there's much more to European Hamsters than their impressive hoarding skills. They are also keystone species in their ecosystems, playing crucial roles that extend far beyond their burrows.

1. Habitat Creation: By burrowing underground, European Hamsters create vital habitat for numerous other species. Their intricate network of tunnels provides shelter for small mammals, reptiles, and insects. These burrows also serve as nesting sites for birds, contributing to overall biodiversity in their habitats.
2. Soil Aeration: The digging activities of European Hamsters help aerate the soil, which is essential for maintaining soil health and promoting nutrient cycling. By loosening the soil and creating channels, they facilitate the movement of air, water, and nutrients, benefiting plant growth and overall ecosystem productivity.
3. Seed Dispersal: European Hamsters play a significant role in seed dispersal, contributing to the dispersal of a variety of plant species in their habitats. As they forage for food, they inadvertently transport seeds in their cheek pouches and scatter them throughout their territory. This process helps to colonise new areas with vegetation, increasing plant diversity and promoting ecosystem resilience.

Despite their ecological importance, European Hamsters are facing a critical threat: habitat loss. Urbanisation and agricultural expansion are encroaching upon their habitats, leaving them with limited space to thrive.
