Fun Fact Friday!

It's Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know that FOUR new species of deep-sea Octopus have just been discovered?

In a recent expedition off Costa Rica, scientists discovered these enigmatic creatures brooding their eggs near hydrothermal vents, suggesting a preference for the deep sea warmth.

The Dorado octopus is the only one to be named so far, and shares traits with the pearl octopus. Two species with double rows of suckers and the striking difference of large eyes were also discovered, and the fourth was an oddball, with a single row of suckers and mysterious bumps.

This discovery is a testament to the incredible biodiversity of the deep sea, reminding us that there's still so much to explore and learn about our planet.

Every step we take to understand the bottom of our oceans contributes to the conservation of these remarkable ecosystems, which are so unique, and so vulnerable to human induced pressures such as deep-sea mining, bottom trawling, and pollution.

So, let's marvel at the wonders of the deep sea and celebrate the thrill of unveiling new species. Happy Friday!
