Fun Fact Friday!

It is fun fact Friday!

Did you know that a biodiverse earth can help to control and mitigate the effects of climate change? Let’s talk about nature-based solutions!

There is no doubt that our way of life needs to drastically change as the impacts of human-induced climate change become more severe. We must significantly reduce our consumption. We must phase out our use of fossil fuels. We must learn to live in harmony with nature.

Nature is key! Virtually everything we rely on, from the food we eat to the device that you’re reading this on, is intricately linked to the services nature provides. Nature keeps Earth, our home, in balance.

Control: A 2010 study revealed that certain baleen whales, like the blue and humpback whales, transport a staggering 30,000 tonnes of carbon to the ocean floor annually. And if whale populations were to rebound to pre-whaling levels? This carbon sink could increase by a remarkable 160,000 tonnes per year.

Mitigate: Coral reefs act as formidable shields, reducing wave energy by an impressive 97% and offering crucial protection to coastal communities against natural hazards. The benefits extend to over 100 million people who rely on reefs for risk reduction, emphasising the costs associated with reef degradation.

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Nature is our protector and supporter, offering countless instances where it safeguards and sustains us. It's high time we reciprocate the favour. Protecting and supporting nature is undeniably one of our most important tools for effectively managing the climate crisis.
